Today the Red Sox decided the fate of quite a few players with the post season just around the corner. According to sources the Red Sox will have a meeting on Monday to finalize the ALDS roster. So far the Sox have made decisions on the players below and their fate once the regular season comes to an end after tomorrow's game.
Junichi Tazawa will travel with the Red Sox to "get a taste" of the playoffs, manager Terry Francona said. After the two games in Anaheim, he will return home.
Michael Bowden will report to Fort Myers.
Dustin Richardson will go home.
Hunter Jones will go home.
Dusty Brown will got to Fort Myers.
George Kottaras will travel with the Sox.
Josh Reddick will report to Fort Myers if J.D. Drew is healthy, and he'll travel with the Sox as a precaution if Drew has a setback. Francona plans on putting Drew in the lineup tomorrow after missing three straight games, so he should be fine.
The most telling move may be Michael Bowden heading to Fort Myers. With Bowden not around, the Red Sox will probably have Paul Byrd as a long man in the bullpen if they choose to carry one. If Reddick goes to Fort Myers and Rocco Baldelli's hip flexor strain is serious, that means Brian Anderson and Joey Gathright would likely split the fourth outfielder duty. To me Gathright makes the most sense, with his speed it gives him the edge with the base stealing threat. While Kottaras will travel with the team, it seems he will not be included on the roster with Martinez and Varitek on the roster.
