Opening Week Has Come and Gone.

For a week that seemed like it took forever it finally came and is now over. All the anticipation and excitement that accumulated waiting for the what seemed like the longest New England winter that I can remember or atleast it seemed. The outcome of Opening Week is not nearly what I thought it would be. First losing 2 out of 3 in their Home Opener with the Tampa Bay Rays. Then heading out west to take 1 out of 3 games against the Los Angeles Angels. We sit in last place 2.5 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays. Now let me say again I am not worried, I am keeping the faith I am just stating the facts as they are presented right now.

The things that I see so far this season that are definately looking up are.... Jason Varitek being a bit more consistant at the plate so far is definately a good sign with how he ended the season in 2008. Jason Bay is leading the team with 6 RBIs and tied with 2 HRs with the Captain Jason Varitek. Brad Penny suprised me once he got out of the 1st inning. He was alot more impressive than what I expected the results to be. Josh Beckett looked solid and back to form in his first start striking out 10. Today he struggled through some innings but still looked more dominant on the mound than what he has been in the past. Kevin Youkilis has been zoned in at the plate batting .522 after the 1st week of the season.

The disappointments so far to date for me are .... Daisuke Matsuzaka - He pitches in the WBC and is practically unstoppable. He wins his 2nd MVP of the World Baseball Classic. He makes his 1st start and doesn't look impressive to me at all. Giving up 3 longs balls and taking the loss. Dustin Pedroia, Jed Lowrie and David Ortiz are in a slump at the plate. Dustin hit a HR at his 1st at bat of the season and since has been struggling. Its something I am not use to seeing after an at bat the reigning MVP yell in utter frustration. Jed and Big Papi are simply in an early season slump along with J.D. Drew, who today hit his first HR of the season. The Sox seem to be struggling with pushing runs across the plate. They have plenty oppurtunities in several of the games with runners in scoring position but come up empty.

So we are onto the 2nd week of the season with the Sox heading into Oakland for a 3 game series then the Sox travel back to Boston for a 4 games weekend series with the Orioles.

Keep the faith man. I've seen time and again where the Sox start out slow and get it together after a few weeks.

Lowrie will pull out of it quickly enough. As for Papi, the bigger worry for me was that he hasn't yet managed an extra base hit on the season. There's still that worry about his wrist being strong enough to give him back his power in my book.

Great stuff and thanks for the friend request on Sawxheads!
